Coming-of-Age Tearjerker ‘Anatomy of Wings’ Premieres at the Black Femme Supremacy Film Festival, September 6th at 8:00pm
Baltimore, MD: For Immediate Release - August 2020
Anatomy of Wings is an emotional masterpiece of young girls blossoming into women through their support system and after school program, Wings. ~ BFS Film Fest Programmer, Samah Ali
Growth, Life, Death, and a handful of video cameras. A journey of breaking cycles and in some cases, repeating them. Melancholy and deeply personal, ‘Anatomy of Wings’ chronicles the journeys of 10 girls as they navigate the nuances of Baltimore life. It's a story of fighting to stay innocent despite the world's heaviness.
It all starts at Dunbar Middle School, where Nikiea Redmond and Kirsten D'Andrea Hollander kickstart ‘Wings’ — a program initially created for girls to learn about video skills. Quickly, the formal curriculum fades away and the weekly meetings shift toward discussing the vulnerabilities of the girls’ experiences. Through trust, mentorship, and leaps of faith, a deep bond is created that lasts the test of time. What is only supposed to last 10 weeks turns into a 10 year experience, where the girls are cinematographers with autonomy in framing how their story is shared with the world.
You get to get some stuff off off your chest. And you just feel so relieved when you're done talking. - Cami, 16

Black and white, young and old, a group of women risk their personal identities to build a second family while creating a documentary-film across the inequities of their Baltimore City neighborhoods.
BREIF SYNOPSIS
At first gathered to create an after-school film project, ten Black middle school girls return each week to collaborate with their Black and *white mentors on a feature-length documentary about their own coming-of-age in Baltimore City. Weeks turn into years. Then, shortly before the girls’ high school graduations, a sea of misunderstanding arises about what’s to come. This self-defined ‘second family’ is left to question if their solidarity will survive the realities of living in a world of racial inequity.
